An open-source skill for AI coding agents

New agent.
Same project.
No lost context.

Give your next agent a clear starting point. Handoff keeps work, ownership, and verification in one shared ledger—right in your repo.

Runs locally. No API key. MIT licensed.

HANDOFF.md · illustrative example

## Fix empty search results
owner: Agent A

[x] Implement the empty state
[x] Verify the no-result query
[ ] Check keyboard navigation

Status: Empty state verified.
Next: test the keyboard flow.
Evidence: commit + test results.

The next session audits the evidence, then continues.

Meet Handoff

Pick up where the work
actually left off.

A fresh session shouldn’t mean a fresh investigation into everything your last agent already did.

One shared ledger.
A clear next step.

Handoff checks recorded tasks against the current code, Git history, and verification evidence. It helps the next agent distinguish unfinished work from stale checkboxes.

And when another agent owns a task, that ownership stays visible.

The workflow

Context that stays with your code.

01 / RECORD

Make the work visible

Tasks, owners, progress, and next actions live in HANDOFF.md. New requests stay visible alongside ongoing work.

02 / AUDIT

Read beyond the checkbox

The next agent checks later entries, commits, and current code before deciding what still needs doing.

03 / CONTINUE

Move the right work forward

Preserve active ownership, finish eligible work, and leave concrete verification for the next session.

The live dashboard

See who owns
what comes next.

A terminal view of the same ledger. Follow named agents and task progress while the work happens.

Get started

Your next session

A few useful details

Built for the way
agents work.

Does Handoff need a server or API key?

No. The skill and ledger workflow run locally in your repository. The optional helper uses Python’s standard library. Optional publishing to your own VPS is opt-in.

Can multiple agents use the same repo?

Yes. The ledger records ownership, and the optional helper uses version-checked, locked writes to prevent one update from silently replacing another. Agents still need to audit ownership and respect active work.

How do I resume in a new session?

In a repository with HANDOFF.md, the skill tells the agent to audit the ledger. You can also ask it to “use handoff and continue”. Claude Code’s plugin includes /handoff:continue.

What can I inspect or change?

Everything. Handoff is MIT licensed: its instructions, helper, tests, and workflow references are in the public GitHub repository.

Keep the momentum

Your next agent
starts with context.
